It’s all too easy to talk about the record of maturity, 15 years after the debut, at the fourth long-distance work, but the new Comaneci’s album is undoubtedly the most complex, and above all complete, of their career, the most successful in carrying on this strange mixture of melody, folk song and experimental attitude. “Rob a Bank” is also the first work to be, at least in the final result, the obvious result of a real band, thanks in particular to the inclusion of drums and percussion by Simone Cavina. Cavina naturally joins the already tight-knit couple that has been carrying on the company name Comaneci for almost ten years, the one composed by the guitarist (and much more) from Cesena Glauco Salvo and the singer (here, as in the band’s live shows, also on guitar and electric piano) Francesca Amati from Ravenna, who founded Comaneci in 2005. The 12 songs of “Rob a Bank” – fascinating already from the cover thanks to the artwork edited by the illustrator Mara Cerri – represent a sort of summa of Comaneci’s musical art, an art that takes inspiration first of all from America (the banjo in ‘Lovers’ is delicious) and in particular from a primitive blues updated to the present, with the help also of poor electronics that is often the added value of many songs, even only thanks to background rustling (the initial ‘I Want You All’ seems almost a declaration of intent). A sound journey that starts from Califone and arrives almost to Bristol in the most abstract moments, without disdaining other more immediate, torch songs or songs with even bucolic flavor.
